Brief biographical note

Kadenyuk Leonid Konstantinovich

First Ukrainian astronaut. Born January 28, 1951 in Ukraine in the village Klishkovichi Khotyn district of Chernivtsi region. In 1967 he graduated from high school in Chernivtsi and in the same year he entered the Chernigov Higher Military Aviation School. Graduated from college in 1971 and served in the aviation wing of the Air Forces of the USSR. In 1976 he was included in the squad of Soviet cosmonauts (1976 Air Force Group number 6). Passed a full course of flight training on ships such as the Soyuz and space stations such as Salyut. In 1977, on the job at the Cosmonaut Training Center graduated from high school test pilots for the Scientific Testing Institute Chkalov Soviet Air Force. In 1978 - 1983 he passed training to fly the ships of the "Buran". In 1983 he was dismissed from the cosmonaut corps of "low moral level" (divorce from his wife). In 1984 - 1988 he worked in Research and Testing Institute Chkalov Soviet Air Force test pilot and instructor pilot. Has over 2400 flying hours. Participated in the tests 54 types and modifications of aircraft, including aerospace aircraft MiG-31 EPOS. As a flight instructor produced 15 pilots. Since 1988, again in the detachment of Soviet cosmonauts. Ready to fly in the ships of the "Buran". In 1989 he graduated from the aircraft at the Moscow Aviation Institute.

In 1990 he was preparing as the commander of the Ukrainian crew to fly to the station "Mir". After the cancellation of the flight, was trained for space flight, which included joining an unmanned spacecraft "Buran" and orbital station "Mir". After the cancellation, and this flight, as well as closing the program "Buran" was trained to fly to the station "Mir" as commander of the Soyuz TM. After the collapse of the Soviet Union remained in Russia and served in the Army Air Forces of Russia. In 1995 he retired from the Armed Forces of Russia and asked for Ukrainian citizenship. Moved to Ukraine and became a research assistant at the Institute of Botany, named after Kholodnogo National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In 1996, included in a group of Ukrainian cosmonauts to be trained to fly in spaceships «Space Shuttle». In July 1996, arrived in the United States to undergo pre-flight preparation. November 19 - December 5, 1997 made a space flight as an experimenter in a spaceship «Columbia» (STS-87). During the flight, doing the experiments on artificial pollination of germs of soybean and rapeseed to produce seeds under conditions of weightlessness. The flight lasted 15 days 16 hours 35 minutes 1 second. After the flight back home and worked at the National Space Agency of Ukraine. Continues to be enrolled in a group of astronauts NASA.
